Fujitsu Launches Two High-Performance 32-bit RISC
Microcontrollers for Digital A/V Applications

Tokyo, March 19, 2002 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of two new 32-bit RISC microcontrollers for DVD players, digital television, video cameras and other digital audio/video equipment. Jointly developed with affiliate Fujitsu VLSI Ltd., the two new products in the MB91125 series of controllers (MB91F127 and MB91F128) will be available starting April 2002.

Digital A/V appliances are now being equipped with ever more sophisticated functions, such as TCP/IP for Internet connections and JPEG image processing. This trend has resulted in the need for high-performance processors to power these features, with demand shifting from 16-bit to 32-bit controllers. Moreover, chip designers need to quickly develop complex programs that will be embedded in these controllers.

Fujitsu's new products meet these needs with the following features:
  • High-performance RISC core (32 MIPS at 25 MHz).
  • Ten times the speed of Fujitsu's 16-bit CISC microprocessor (3 MIPS).
  • Low power-consuming CPU core (2 mA/MIPS: roughly one-sixth of Fujitsu's 16-bit CISC processors) and power savings through clock gear*1 function that can change frequencies independently of the CPU.
  • Embedded programs are the same compact size as those for 16-bit CISC processors.
  • Includes high-capacity 4 MB flash memory for large embedded application programs (MB91F128).

MB91125 Series Specifications:

Process technology: CMOS 0.35 micron meter
Voltage: 3.3V ± 0.3V
Clock frequency: 25 MHz
Embedded memory:MB91F127: 256 KB (flash memory); 14 KB (RAM)
MB91F128: 510 KB (flash memory); 14 KB (RAM)
External bus:Address: 25 bits
I/O: 8/16 bits
UART*2 communications
A/D converter: 8/10 bits
Timers: Reload timer*3, U-timer*4, PPG*5, ICU*6, OCU*7, Watch Dog*8

Sample pricing in Japan (excluding tax)
MB91F127 : ¥1,400
MB91F128 : ¥1,500
Shipment: Early April, 2002 (both models)

Building on its embedded flash memory technology Fujitsu intends to apply its expertise in system LSI to further reduce surface areas and number of components, and continue to expand its line of high-performance microcontrollers for digital home appliances, audio/video equipment and PC peripherals.

Glossary

*1: Clock gear function
A power-saving technology that permits the CPU and the various other devices on the motherboard to each operate at different clock rates.
*2: UART: Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter
A macro core for asynchronous serial communications. This macro core also permits clock-synched communications.
*3: Reload timer
A timer that issues a signal repeatedly, at a programmable time interval.
*4: U-timer
A timer used to generate the UART transfer rate. Can also be used as a normal 16-bit reload timer.
*5: PPG: Programmable Pulse Generator
Generates an output waveform with a programmable frequency and pulse width.
*6: ICU: Input Capture Unit
Used to measure the pulse width of an input waveform.
*7: OCU: Output Compare Unit
Generates an output waveform with a programmable pulse width.
*8: Watch Dog timer
CPU runaway detection timer.
*9: LQFP: Low-profile Quad Flat Package
A type of surface-mount plastic packaging with a mounted height of 1.7 mm or less.
