Tokyo, June 21, 2001---
Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has released Version 4 of INTERSTAGE, its software platform for Web services, which allows B2B (business-to-business) commerce and mobile operations for corporate computer systems.
As we move into the era of broadband Internet, corporate computer systems, which used to integrate data just from within a corporation, are now integrating data from both customers and suppliers-as well as operating in a mobile environment.
B2B commerce, which integrates corporate systems with the open Internet commerce of the e-marketplace, not only builds up new relations with suppliers and customers, but also plays a role in revolutionizing work processes.
In addition, the introduction of Java-capable mobile terminals has made it possible to use corporate computer systems in more diverse ways. For example, they are becoming powerful tools for promoting innovation and boosting efficiency for corporate sales divisions.
In light of these developments, Fujitsu has been looking toward the next stage in B2B commerce, working together with a variety of partners and standardization organizations to test new products. The result is INTERSTAGE V4, which brings together in one product J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition)*1, RosettaNet*2, ebXML*3, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol)*4, WSDL (Web Service Description Language)*5, UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration)*6, and other new standard technologies that serve as the infrastructure for B2B commerce systems.
The new software is also equipped with BLUEGRID*7, which allows users to access EJB components*8, application units on server, from i-applications*9 on mobile phones. This feature makes mobile operation of B2B commerce a reality.
In order to address the needs of a multitude of corporate computer systems, Fujitsu has been cooperating with ERP, package, and tool vendors, and have now established the INTERSTAGE PARTNER PROGRAM*10, which will broaden the company's cooperation with domestic and overseas vendors.
INTERSTAGE has been one of the best-selling B2B commerce platforms in Japan (used on 7,000 servers as of March 2001). Fujitsu will continue to spare no effort in making INTERSTAGE a product that offers high reliability, scalability, and availability, as well as compatibility with standard industry specifications worldwide.
SALES TARGET
Fujitsu plans to sell and install INTERSTAGE on 65,000 servers within the next three years.
GLOBAL EDITION
INTERSTAGE V4 global edition is scheduled to be available by the end of this year.
Terminology
- 1. J2EE
- Java2 Enterprise Edition: the specification standards for Java component development, as well as a protocol and component architecture for distributed applications, in Sun Microsystems' highly-touted Java.
- 2. RosettaNet
- A standards organization that determines procedures for exchanging business information with customers and suppliers, in addition to compiling industry dictionaries and component codes, in order to promote more efficient electronic commerce between companies. It is specialized for use in the information technology and electronic components industries.
- 3. ebXML
- An abbreviation for electronic business XML, a global, open, XML-based protocol for standardization of B2B e-commerce environments.
- 4. SOAP
- An abbreviation for Simple Object Access Protocol. A communications protocol for exchanging XML-based information in a distributed network environment. It has been commercialized in INTERSTAGE on the basis of the results of .NET interconnectivity experiments with Microsoft.
- 5. WSDL
- An abbreviation of Web Service Description Language. This is an XML-based interface descriptive language for Web services, capable of describing such information as access points (URLs), use protocols (SOAP, HTTP, MIME), and message formats (XML schemata). All the major vendors (including IBM and Microsoft) have expressed support for this as an essential technology for the spread of Web services.
- 6. UDDI
- An abbreviation of Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration. A directory for obtaining XML-based company information (company names, products offered, target markets, etc.) in the e-marketplace.
- 7. BLUEGRID

- 8. EJB (Enterprise Java Beans) Components
- A standard specification for development of software components in server applications, promoted by Sun Microsystems and others. Following the EJB specifications provided by the application server allows easy database connections and transaction management. It is also possible to reuse components in different applications.
- 9. i-application
- An application for i-mode mobile phones written in the Java language and offered by NTT DoCoMo.
- 10. INTERSTAGE PARTNER PROGRAM
- A program based on mutual cooperation in promotions, seminars, and other marketing activities, ensuring Interstage's compatibility with the products of other partner firms and offering customer service for the combined products.
