Fujitsu Announces Launch of New US-Based Company
To Target Exploding Storage Software Market

Fujitsu Softek Will Forge Leadership Position in Global Market for
Vendor-Independent, Storage Management Software Solutions

Tokyo/Sunnyvale, March 27, 2001 --- Fujitsu Limited today announced the launch of Fujitsu Software Technology Corporation (Fujitsu Softek), a new U.S.-based company designed to capitalize on the rapidly growing worldwide storage management software market. Formed as part of the overall realignment of Fujitsu's North American IT infrastructure and services strategy, Fujitsu Softek combines intellectual property and operational resources from Fujitsu Limited and its wholly owned subsidiary, Amdahl Corporation. The new company will develop and market world-class, vendor-independent storage management software, adding to its industry leading products, such as Softek TDMF and Softek DR Manager software products, carried over from Amdahl's portfolio.

"Fujitsu's international business focus has been on investing in those business operations and markets that represent very high growth potential," said Fujitsu Limited's Junji Maeyama, Senior Vice President and Group President, Software Group. "The storage management software sector fits this profile and is an area where we are extremely well positioned to take a global leadership role."

"The establishment of Fujitsu Softek is a key step in our reorganization aimed at expanding Fujitsu's IT platform and services business, particularly in the crucial North American market," said Amdahl president and CEO Yasushi Tajiri. "Leveraging the resources and R&D strengths of the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu Softek will play a central role in aggressively growing Fujitsu's market share and revenues in the North American and European marketplaces, which together represent 85% of the worldwide storage management software market."

According to Dataquest, global storage management revenues are expected to double by 2003 and reach US$14.7 billion in 2004. Dataquest also forecasts the compound annual growth rate for the next five years at 28.5%. Forrester Research predicts that companies will increase their average online storage capacities by a factor of 10 over the next five years. This means that storage and associated administration will grow from five percent of current information systems budgets to 17 percent in 2003, Forrester estimates.

Boasting a management team with decades of experience in the software industry, dedicated research and development facilities, and an existing portfolio of products already fully supporting the infrastructures of Global 1000 customers, Fujitsu Softek aims to take the global leadership position in the fast growing storage management marketplace as a single source vendor for open storage software products aimed at simplifying complex enterprise storage infrastructures. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, the company has operational facilities in Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC, Toronto and Montreal. European headquarters are in London, with offices in major European countries including Ireland, France, Italy, and Germany. It will also leverage Fujitsu's current distribution capabilities in Asia and the Pacific Rim. First-year revenues are projected to be in excess of US$90 million, with initial employment of 285 people.

Steven F. X. Murphy has been named chief executive officer of the newly created firm. He was president of the former Amdahl Software Division. "Business critical computing today demands quick access to phenomenal amounts of time-sensitive data as this information becomes the new economy's currency," said Murphy. "In the rush to accumulate and archive this data, companies have been forced to install large storage infrastructures, which are often composed of disparate devices layered on complex architectures, such as SANs. Additionally, this exponential growth of storage has far outpaced the skilled human resources to manage it. There is a tremendous need for enterprise software to simplify storage management."
"The storage management software portfolio at Fujitsu Softek is a suite of applications designed to let users respond to requests for specific information at any given time about the state of their enterprise data," he added. "These management solutions enable enterprises to have instant access to intelligence about applications that utilize large volumes of storage and take proactive measures to maintain service levels. We have designed this suite to simplify the management of disparate storage systems across the enterprise."

Reporting to Murphy are: Nicholas F. Tabellion, Chief Technology Officer (CTO); Sandra L. Curry, Chief Financial Officer (CFO); Tim Butchart, Vice President of European Sales and Services; David A. Wiener, Vice President of North American West Sales and Services; and Earnest L. Williams, Vice President of North American East Sales and Services.

"We have completed all of the planning and logistics necessary for the new company to begin smooth operations immediately," Murphy added. "We have strength and depth in both our product suite and global distribution channels. We have staked out an aggressive market position and strategy, which should generate significant market growth and earnings. Fujitsu Softek is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities that this complex market affords, with visionary applications, strong management, and a staff of seasoned engineers who helped pioneer this industry.''

Fujitsu Softek is organized along five distinct lines of business that address specific demands of current customers and emerging IT sectors. These include Storage Data Management, encompassing enterprise backup and recovery; Storage Infrastructure, encompassing data migration and replication; Storage Resource Management; Quality-of-Service Monitoring; and Professional Consulting.

According to Murphy, "Fujitsu Softek will enable global enterprises to proactively manage multi-vendor storage resources based on business policies and processes that ensure 24 x 7 availability of business critical applications."

Fujitsu Softek's storage product portfolio is spearheaded by the industry-leading Softek TDMF software suite, originally developed and marketed by Amdahl's software division. Some 40 percent of the world's largest corporations have deployed Softek TDMF with an unprecedented degree of satisfaction. Current installations of Softek TDMF mainframe and open systems editions represent more than $100 million in revenue, making it one of the top 10 software revenue-generating products of its kind in the industry.

Fujitsu Softek's new Storage Virtualization product, 'Powered by DataCore', speeds allocation of SAN storage resources. It simplifies the provisioning of storage resources by removing the boundaries of direct connection and creating open network storage pools so extra capacity is not tied to a server but is available wherever necessary.

The Softek quality-of-service monitoring product is Softek EnView, considered one of the industry's most complete software performance management products due to its ability to measure performance, availability and responsiveness on a combination of legacy, web and client/server platforms. Current customers include some of the most successful global financial and telecommunications corporations in the world.

"Fujitsu Softek has all the necessary ingredients for success including an experienced management team, passionate storage software engineers, a heritage of customer support and loyalty and a product suite that provides a measurable return on investment in a growing market," Murphy concluded. "We now offer global organizations the best quality, simplified storage management and monitoring solutions available, all backed by the third largest IT company in the world."
