Fujitsu Introduces 11 New 3.5-inch GMR Head Hard Drives for Worldwide OEM Market

- storage capacity as great as 36.4GB, rotation speed up to 10,000 rpm -

GMR

Tokyo, October 27, 1998 -- Fujitsu Limited today introduced eleven new 3.5-inch hard disk drive models, all equipped with Giant Magneto Resistive (GMR) heads (*1). The new devices will be sold to the OEM market worldwide starting November 30th. This introduction completes Fujitsu's adoption of GMR head technology for its full line of disk devices, including 2.5-inch hard disk drives for the OEM notebook computer market (available since August).

Product Highlights

  1. Three high-performance hard drive models suitable for high-end mainframes.
    (MAF3364/MAG3182/MAG3091).

GMR head technology boosts maximum storage capacity to 36.4 GB for the MAF3364 model, which is 1.6 inch thick, while the 1-inch-thick MAG3182 and MAG3091 models have maximum storage capacities of 18.2 GB and 9.1 GB, respectively. These models all have disk rotation speeds of 10,000 rpm, and their maximum internal transfer rate is 44.7MB per second, among the best in the industry. Ultra-2 SCSI interface and 16-bit wide transfer technology(*2) makes possible high-speed transmission of up to 80MB per second. In addition, average seek time is reduced to 5.0ms (MAG3182/MAG3091 models, reading) thanks to high-speed positioning technology, resulting in an overall improvement of throughput.

  2. Two high-performance hard drive models for workstations, disk arrays and PC servers. (MAE3182/MAE3091)

The MAE3182/MAE3091 models are each 1-inch thick and have rotation speeds of 7,200 rpm, with storage capacities of 18.2GB/9.1GB, respectively. Memory is double that of existing devices and includes a large data buffer space of 2MB. Ultra-2 SCSI interface and 16-bit wide transfer makes possible high-speed transmission of up to 80MB per second.

  3. Six internal hard drive models for a wide range of desktops PCs, from entry-level PCs to PC servers - MPD3XXXAT Series

The series features 4.3 GB of memory capacity per disk, which is made possible by GMR head technology, EPR4ML (Extended Partial Response Class4 Maximum Likelihood) recording method and track density of 13,750 TPI. Hard drive memory capacity ranges from 4.3 GB to 17.3 GB. 512KB data buffer and average seek time of 9.5ms ensure high throughput. Handling global standard ATA-4 interface and supporting Ultra DMA (Direct Memory Access) transfer, these disk drives deliver a maximum transfer speed of 33.3MB per second. By the end of January 1999, Fujitsu plans to add drives that support Ultra DMA-66, doubling the speed to 66.6MB per second.

MAF3364/MAG3182/MAG3091: 2 million units
MPD3XXXAT Series: 12 million units

OEM sample pricing - not including tax

MAE3364/MAG3182/MAG3091: starting at 200,000 yen (MAG3091)
MAE3182/MAE3091: starting at 160,000 yen (MAE3091)
MPD3XXXAT Series: starting at 70,000 yen (4.3GB model)

(*1) GMR (Giant Magneto Resistive) head The newest head, superior to existing MR (magneto resistive) head in read-in sensitivity and offering a dramatic increase in storage capacity.

(*2) 16-bit wide transfer To differentiate from existing 8-bit transmission, 16-bit transmission is referred to as wide transmission.
